3 Reasons People Choose to Consume a Vegan Diet

If you’re vegan, you may think twice before sinking your teeth into a slice of cake. Does it contain ingredients such as eggs, butter, dairy milk, honey, or gelatin? If so, it wouldn’t quite fit into a vegan diet. People who are vegan eat fully plant-based diets, omitting all meat and foods derived from animals.

With the recent rise of veganism, many animal-based ingredients are no longer considered staple components of baked goods. Cupcakes, cakes, pastries, and more can be made using 100% plant-based ingredients -  and the best part is they taste amazing!

As the buzz around veganism grows, you may have found yourself wondering what the benefits of a plant-based diet are. Below we’ll highlight three of the more popular reasons that people choose to eat vegan.

1)  Healthier diet

Research has shown that well-planned vegan diets can provide all the nutrients that a person needs, while eliminating some of the possible risks associated with consuming animal fats. Vegan foods can be highly nutritious, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and even aid with weight loss. Of course, not all vegan food is necessarily healthy, but getting nutrients from plant foods allows more room in one’s diet for health promoting options like whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetables, which are full of fibre, vitamins and minerals. People who eat plant-based foods purely for the health benefits are often called “dietary vegans”, or “plant-based”.

 2)  Animal Advocacy

Avoiding cruelty towards animals is one of the main reasons that many vegans choose a plant-based diet in the first place. Vegans believe that all animals deserve to be free from pain, fear and suffering. People who are vegan for this reason primarily are often called “ethical vegans”. Ethical vegans frequently go beyond just eating a plant-based diet and will incorporate veganism into their entire lifestyle. This could include cruelty-free clothes, entertainment, household products, cosmetics, hobbies, and more.

 3)  The Environment

Eliminating animal products from one’s diet can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, preserve habitats and species, and conserve water, among other environmental benefits. With increasing warnings about global warming, and the popularity of documentaries like Cowspiracy, the environment is a driving factor for many people who choose to consume a vegan diet. Research shows that even simply cutting back on meat consumption can be beneficial for the environment!
